A useful AI image prompt does not simply ask for something “stunning” or “ultra-detailed.” It describes the image as a visual brief: what is happening, where the viewer looks, how the scene is lit, and which details must remain controlled.
The model still interprets the brief, so no wording guarantees an exact result. But a clear structure makes iteration deliberate: you can change the composition without accidentally changing the subject, or adjust the palette without rebuilding the entire concept.
The visual rule
Describe relationships, not a pile of style words.
“A person on the left with empty space for a headline on the right” controls the layout. “Beautiful, professional, epic” does not.
A seven-part image prompt formula
Subject
The person, object, place, or idea the image is about.
Action
What the subject is doing or what moment is shown.
Environment
The setting, time, weather, surface, and surrounding elements.
Composition
Shot size, angle, focal point, negative space, and aspect ratio.
Light
Source, direction, contrast, softness, and atmosphere.
Visual system
Palette, medium, texture, era, and material treatment.
Constraints
Elements to preserve, exclude, or leave blank for later design work.

Edit an existing image
Edit the provided image while preserving [identity/composition/product geometry]. Change only [specific element] to [desired change]. Match the existing camera perspective, lighting direction, shadows, texture, and depth of field. Keep [elements] untouched. The result should look naturally photographed, with no seams, added text, or unrelated objects.
How to iterate without losing the good parts
Choose the strongest result and identify exactly what works: perhaps the camera angle, silhouette, or lighting. Preserve those elements explicitly in the next instruction and change one variable at a time. If you are editing a reference image, state both the requested change and the parts that must remain untouched.
✓The subject and action are unambiguous.
✓The focal point and negative space are deliberately placed.
✓Light, palette, and style support the same mood.
✓The aspect ratio matches the real use case.
✓Text and logos are added later when precision matters.
✓References, identities, trademarks, and sensitive images are used responsibly.
The image lesson
Write the prompt like a creative brief: define the subject, direct the viewer’s eye, and make each revision intentional.
